An active 3-week workshop
exploring improvisation skills
for speakers and facilitators

Learning the basics of improv helps you adjust quickly and have the confidence to think freely when things don't go to plan

Our interactions are always influenced by status. We'll play with what this looks like and how it matters in our world

Improvisation is essentially 'creating together in the moment'. We'll flex these muscles and explore working together

As the world shifts and changes our roles as speakers and facilitators mean we need to be sharp, on our toes and ready for anything.
Nothing prepares us for uncertainty better than improvisation. This is a workshop to sharpen your skills, connect with each other - all done through the power of play!
When: Tuesday 6th, 13th & 20th October
Time: 6pm - 9pm
Venue: Balam Balam Place, 15 Phoenix Street, Brunswick

That's fine. This workshop requires no previous knowledge of improv, we'll be working together from the ground up.
A lot of improvisation classes focus on improvisation for performance, whereas we will be exploring improvisation from the perspective of using the principles and skills of improv in our own work environment. The workshop will be a collaborative process where we will discuss the benefits of each exercise together and what each skill gives us in our daily lives.
Improv is physical. So wear comfortable clothes that you can move in and flat comfortable shoes. Bring some water as well in case we move around a bit.
Absolutely! If you can let me know before of any accessibility requirements and we'll make sure that the games chosen will be inclusive. You can also choose to sit out of any game or activity along the way should you feel you wish to.
Improvisation always starts with a warm up. We'll take some time to warm up our minds and our bodies before we start to explore the topic of the evening. The class is very much an interactive experience; you'll be learning from your own journey. My job is to 'side coach' your own experience, so you will walk away with deep learning that is relevant to you.
Improvisation is about a group creating together. For this reason, we ask that everyone present joins in. However, we will ease into the space slowly and safely and you will not be asked to do anything outside your own comfort zone.

Trudi has taught improvisation for over 20 years, training in the US and UK in Viola Spolin's side-coaching method. With students ages 7-70, she has helped people understand the power of improv in organisations and community settings.
She uses it herself daily. On stages, in organisations and believes that the skills that improv teaches us make us better humans.
"As Viola Spolin says, get out of your head and into the space. It's were the magic happens."
Viola Spolin (1906–1994) was a pioneering theatre educator, director, and the creator of modern improvisational theatre. Often called the 'mother of improv,' she revolutionised actor training with her development of Theatre Games—a groundbreaking method that used play and spontaneity to help actors unlock creativity, presence, and authentic connection. Drawing from her studies in social work and progressive education under Neva Boyd, Spolin believed that learning and transformation happen best through experience, not instruction.
In improv, every scene is created in real time without a script. The success of a scene depends on the players’ ability to co-create, rather than contradict or block each other. The phrase 'Yes, and...' encapsulates two actions:
- 'Yes' means accepting what your scene partner has offered as true within the world of the scene. It fosters agreement and trust, rather than denial or resistance.
- 'And' means building upon that offer with new information. It keeps the momentum moving forward and helps expand the reality you’re both creating.
When both partners say 'Yes, and...'—even if not literally using those words—they are engaging in active listening, validating each other’s input, and co-creating a shared narrative. This practice strengthens ensemble work, fosters openness, and keeps scenes alive and playful.
I work with organisations, speakers and individuals to solve their creative blocks, their process problems and help them be more connected humans, to their team, their job or themselves.
Through play theory, experiential learning, design thinking and applied improvisation - I'm making the world a more playful place - one organisation at a time!
